Season Eight, Project Two: America's Next Top Churro

Team All Stars

The Matterhorn Avalanche

Oh, we have a snack. Don't worry about that. For now, I just want to address the main theme that's going to tie this project together. In sitting down to come up with the snack we wanted to build this project around, one thing instantly came to my mind. There's a tradition of snacking and telling stories that anyone who has ever exchanged ghost stories over fire-roasted marshmallows can attest to. It's a tradition that is rooted in our culture, and probably in a lot of cultures. For that reason, we really wanted to play with the key theme of storytelling this time around. It's obvious that storytelling really is the thing that makes Disney parks tick. Everywhere around you when you are in a Disney park, the story is simply coming alive before your very eyes. Every ride, every store, every last vending cart serves a thematic purpose. We REALLY wanted to play with that this time around. Our snack is called the Matterhorn Avalanche, and let's just say...it's a little play on the common Smores snack, but, well...taken to new heights, if you will. The arrival of the Matterhorn Avalanche smack dab at the base of the Matterhorn will not only welcome it's own backstory, but also a completely new alpine themed mini-lodge to tie everything together. You guys said to get as blue-sky as we wanted with this thing, and that's EXACTLY what were doing. Prepare yourself for a Disney snack...All Star style!

"A Place of This Much Awesomeness...": A Backstory

Two mountaineers, Gibson and Burns, had been trekking up the mighty Matterhorn when they discovered a cavern. Entering the cavern, they found members of the lost Wells Expedition team. The team had taken refuge in the icy cavern when they had lost contact with their base camp months prior. All they had with them were wood, graham crackers, chocolate, and marshmallows. They had used up their wood to build a half-basketball court to amuse themselves. However, since the snowballs they would use fell apart quickly, the effort was ultimately for nothing. They had managed to keep themselves alive by feasting on a dessert they created with their food resources. Just for fun, they shaped it like the mountain they were trapped in and called it a Matterhorn Avalanche. Impressed, Gibson and Burns offered to not only bring the team to safety, but help them recuperate financially by franchising the Matterhorn Avalanche. The team had no hesitation in taking up their offer.

"Wood-Punk"

Oh yes, here we go with the "Punk" this, and the "Punk" that. I know that after our first project, seeing the word "Punk" in anything might just make your skin crawl a little, but just hear me out. So basically, everyone arrives safely at the base of the Matterhorn. Gibson and Burns, dollar signs rolling in their eyes, want to cash in on the Matterhorn Avalanche idea almost immediately. They soon got to work drafting and blueprinting what would ultimately become, in their eyes, the PERFECT snack to accompany their perfect story.

The dynamic duo had a perfect vision, they just needed a place to set up shop. Thus, the simply named "Alpine Lodge" was constructed at the base of the Matterhorn. The lodge was a simple wood building...that would undergo a lot of transformation between the time the two purchased it and the time it opened. In addition to the lodge, the two also paid for a huge contracting project to get the surrounding area nice and spiffy looking.

For fifty years, the Matterhorn Bobsleds have been one of the most popular attractions at Disneyland in Anaheim California. The only problem that the ride has it that it doesn't really fit the themes of Fantasy or Tomorrowland. So why not create a miniland just for this mountain?

The main reason for this subland is to connect both the Matterhorn and the ski lodge where guests can buy a Matterhorn Avalanche. The bulk of this connection will be adding a series of streams that will run from the splash pool at the end of the ride to the lagoon that once held the motor boat cruise(this lagoon is the home of the ski lodge.) Of course these streams will be themed with rocks on either side of them and the occasional fish that can swim up or down stream to the lagoon. The streams only occasionally go across the paths and is mostly running through the large planters in the area. The places that the stream flows through the path will have a small wooden bridge that guests can walk over. The whole area in general will be re themed a bit to look like a pretty wooded area with pine trees placed all around the area(mainly in the large planters but some will be in the path. Over at the lagoon, there will also be a tiny bit of retheming. Large pine trees will be placed all around the edge of the lagoon. There will also be large rocks placed around the edge of the lagoon. Guests can also see the occasional woodland animal from the deck of the lodge if they're looking close enough.

At this point, I think it'd be wise to tell you a little bit about who Gibson and Burns really are. They are basically entrepreneurs who were scaling the Matterhorn looking for inspiration. Gibson is tall, lanky, and timid, but also has an acute child-like sense what appeals to the public. Burns, who is older and more hard-headed, basically uses Gibsons ideas and tweaks them into the ultimate marketing ventures. That's basically who the two of them are as characters. Just wanted to throw that out there, moving on...

So, Gibson and Burns have this prime real-estate, this really exciting story they want to share with the world, this great idea for a snack, and this ski lodge that they have constructed for themselves. The only problem is...they don't have a staff to mind the lodge. Gibson, drawing on his ever so handy child-like sense of wonder, brought up the idea of wood-pulley systems that would serve the guests their food. This way, the two wouldn't have to worry about staffing the place, they could just entertain the guests 24/7. A big part of this operation, Burns figured, was word of mouth. Giving customers literally the time of their life in one of the most unique places in the world.

So, Gibson and Burns went to work on some last minute renovations inside the building. The end result was elegant and mind-boggling at the same time. Basically, guests walk in, take a seat, and are treated to service automated only by wooden pulley contraptions. Modern technology obviously will be used to make these things run sufficiently, but the end result should make the place look like a completely and totally unique place and time. The size of the lodge is really relatively modest. It takes the place of the Fantasia Gardens area where the old Motor Boat Cruise station used to be.

Attached to the side of the building and dipping into the lagoon is an elaborate water wheel. This will be a visual trademark of the Alpine Lodge, and also will be what runs all the "wood-punk" elements inside.

Alright, so now you know what we mean by "wood-punk". Good, were in the clear. The lodge itself will have counter service with a full meal inside, and a window servicing just the Matterhorn Avalanche on the side of the building, which features some seating that has great views of both the Matterhorn itself and the water wheel. Here is a menu for the Alpine Lodge.

The Avalanche: Taking Snacks to New Heights

The only item available in the counter service section of the ski lodge is the Matterhorn Avalanche. This new dessert combines two classic treats but also brings back a bit of nostalgia from the old days of the classic attraction. The whole treat is basically ice cream combined with s'mores all in an ice cream sundae form. On the bottom are three to five scoops of hot chocolate ice cream which is basically chocolate ice cream with marshmallow swirls. On top of the ice cream is a layer of whipped cream which is makes it look like the sundae is covered in snow. In the very center of the sundae is a large graham object that is in the shape of Matterhorn Mountain. The outside layer is a graham cracker crust that is filled with marshmallow with a bit of melted chocolate on the top part. The top of the mountain is dipped in chocolate and has some powdered sugar sprinkled on top. This sundae is held in a special dish that is made specifically for this one dish. The dish is shaped to look like one of the classic Matterhorn Bobsleds. Each sled has a different colored front portion(much like how they were in the early days of the ride.) These colors include green, blue, red and gold. These sleds all have white colored sides with the exception of the gold one which has black sides. The gold sled is particularly special. When it is handed out, the guest buying it automatically wins a night in the Dream Suite which is placed right over Pirates of the Caribbean. This sled is only given out three times every month. When this is won, guests can bring the bowl to Town Hall to receive their prize.

This irresistible treat begins with the special “Avalanche Bowl” shaped like one of the Matterhorn Bobsleds it is soon loaded with its passengers, three small scoops of rich creamy Hot Chocolate Ice Cream. Next a thin layer of Whip cream is set upon the ice cream and the Matterhorn itself is added to the top.

The Matterhorn piece is made up of a graham cracker crust in the shape of the mountain that is covered in a thin layer of delectable Swiss chocolate then covered with a hand full of small marshmallows. The hollow inside of the mountain is then filled in the top piece with chocolate and marshmallow fudge and then with the ice cream flavor of the guest’s choice, depicted below as a continuation of the Hot Chocolate ice cream base.

Just Sit Right Back, and You'll Hear a Tale...
The characters of Gibson and Burns will ALWAYS be present in the Alpine Lodge. That is the whole idea. Their whole character dynamic will be slowly introduced into Disney park mythology. Their whole schist is that they tell stories. Some seem plausible, some you can just tell they're completely over-exaggerating. That's the fun of the whole thing! We figure the two characters are a-typical enough that it wouldn't be hard to find crews of people that can play them through various shifts. At some points during the dining, the two might put on a performance for the whole lodge, at other points they'll interact one on one with the various tables. How these two interact with you (and throughout the WHOLE thing, the backstory about them being businessmen gets thrown around in subtle ways) is really one of the most fun things about coming to the Alpine Lodge to begin with. One thing's for sure, it's ALWAYS a different show.

First Disneyland, Then...The World!!

Needless to say, the creation of the Matterhorn Avalanche sees Gibson and Burns with a lot of financial success. What's the first rule of anything that catches on with the public? If they like it...Expand on it. And so, Alpine Lodges started popping up all over the world sharing Gibson and Burns' treat with the world, as well as their tall tales of the might Matterhorn Mountain. Here are some of the places the two will be taking up shop...

Disneyland Paris ~ As expansion of the treat continues Disneyland Paris will get it’s own little “Matterhorn Ice Cream shop.” Located right off Main Street in Disneyland Park Paris this little eatery will take the place of the Coffee Grinder and Ice Cream Company will be combined under the new name (Insert DLR's Restaurant Name here), in order to match it’s Disneyland Resort California counterpart.

This new eatery will follow the storyline that the inventors of the Matterhorn Avalanche have purchased these two shops and combined them into one shop to help expand their business to small towns all over America. However they enjoyed the architecture so much they left it the same and just changed the signage. This eatery will sell the traditional Matterhorn Avalanche in addition to smaller bowls of Ice Cream, Coffee, mainly espresso though, and small plates of s’mores.

Hong Kong Disneyland ~

Lastly with the continued expansion Hong Kong Disneyland will receive a lot more than just their own “Matterhorn Ice Cream Shop”. Due to the parks disappointing lack of mountains HKDL will receive a miniature mountain Range known as the Alpines.

Located on the Grassy Field behind the Dumbo attraction the Alpines will be a two story show building with a façade done like that of Radiator Springs Racers, however much smaller and with a Matterhorn style look to it. Rather like the mountains in Storybookland in Disneyland but more three dimensional and draped over a show building. The show building will house only one attraction which is a Tom Sawyer’s Island style adventure through the mountains, with ice Caverns and Yeti eyes spying on you from time to time, the area is ripe for a possible “HKDL Haunt” in the coming years.

However the whole show building is not just the fun exploration attraction it also houses a Disneyland Railroad show as well. The Train will enter the mountains after leaving Adventureland under the idea that they must go through the Alpine Mountains to reach Fantasyland. Guests will then be warned to beware of the Yeti.

The train will weave in and out of the mountain which is at times entirely dark, at other times an ice cavern, then near the end (the blue dot on the map) The Train runs into the Yeti! It continues past it and heads out into Fantasyland! This would therefore give The HKDL Railroad a wonderful transition between the two lands.

The Alpine Mountains Range, although a fun attraction and show for HKDLRR riders also has one more trick up its sleeve, providing the perfect background to The Alpine Lodge. Quite simply it is a smaller version of the Disneyland Resort’s (Insert Restaurant at DLR’s name here) and sells and identical menu.

Walt Disney World ~ Due to the large size of the resort, the Matterhorn Avalanche will be served at two locations.

One location will be in World Showcase at Epcot.

Located on the borderline of Italy and Germany, the interior of the small-to-medium-sized eatery will have an Italian design to it with some Swiss elements here and there. Going with the backstory, Gibson and Burns set up this location so that the locals could sample the treat based on the nearby namesake. A namesake that can be seen out of a window in the eatery (a diorama).

The other location will be in Disney's Hollywood Studios.

The Matterhorn Avalanche will be served out of Gertie the Dinosaur in Echo Lake. Gertie, who already serves ice cream, has become the location for a cast party of Third Man on the Mountain, whose filming equipment can be seen nearby with a sign that says CAST PARTY AT DINOSAUR GERTIE'S. The dinosaur-shaped stand is serving Matterhorn Avalanches to commemorate the wrapping up of the film.

Tokyo Disneyland ~ Across the Pacific Ocean, Japanese guests may also find the Matterhorn Avalanche in Fantasyland. The location: Cinderella Castle.

It seems as though Cinderella herself absolutely loves the Matterhorn Avalanche and has allowed Gibson and Burns to sell them from her castle. Inside, guests will find a mixed regal-Bavarian theme. There are also a couple mirrors adorning the walls. Guests who are right by one of them may be startled when the Slave in the Magic Mirror suddenly appears in it and speaks of the various goings-on in the village.

"Tell Harold I Said Hi": A Conclusion

Well, that's our project for you. Quiet honestly, I think it pretty much speaks for itself. The Matterhorn Avalanche is a brilliant thing to introduce into Disney parks because not only is it an absolutely DELECTABLE desert, it also serves the purpose of thematically tying the Matterhorn into other Disney parks and giving us two new unique characters to add to park lore. Also, it freaking makes use of the basketball court as a plot element. Come on...how cool is that? In all honestly, we just figure that the Matterhorn Avalanche and subsequent Alpine Lodges are a great new addition to Disney parks around the world. This has been Tiki delivering another All Star project.

Team Wild Cards:

With the enormous success of Vinylmations throughout the Disney world, it’s hard to believe that’s it’s only been about two years since the first Vinylmation appeared in the parks. Since then, many have made Vinylmations a great part of their Disney collection or even a way of life. Many fans and collectors have wondered: “How can Vinylmations be more of a part of my life?”… Well… at least we at team Wild Card wondered that! Today, we’re here to present an amazingly tasty, simply delicious new snack mixed with the collecting appeal of the Vinylmation figure. And what could be a better thing to convey the spirit of Vinylmations than delicious fluffy and light meringue cookies?

Our new snack, called 'Vinylmation Puffs', will be the new must-have treat for park-goers wishing to take a piece of Disney magic home, Disney history fanatics who love subtle reference to the past, and Disney merchandise collectors who simply must have the latest and greatest collectable. With some pretty interesting flavors, and each flavor boxed in a cool, collectable must-have case, Vinylmation Puffs are wonderful snacks that double as take-home souvenirs… and we haven’t even discussed the special surprise! You see, this delicious treat doesn't have a super-specific backstory around it. This was a conscious decision. This treat, as you'll see later, has remarkable flexibility due to the nature of it's flavorings and it's packaging. Therefore, we think this treat has the ability to appear all across Disney Parks without being tied down to a specific area. While backstory has a specific time and place, we feel this would not be the best way to go with this project. Does a Mickey Premium or a Churro need a backstory to be delicious?

The YUM Factor

Everyone loves meringue cookies; they’re those little marshmallow-y cookies with a crunchy exterior and a sugary interior that simply melts in your mouth. They’re also the perfect blank canvas for a great variety of flavors. Usually, you can find meringues in simple (but tasty) French Vanilla or Rich Chocolate flavors, or maybe a Coffee flavor. Boring, right? Here in Disney, though, there’s nothing boring about meringues.

Vinylmations each have their own blank canvas to work with, the blank Mickey Mouse shape, but each Vinylmation is unique in it’s own way. Taking a cue from Vinylmations, Vinylmation Puffs use the blank canvas of meringue as a foundation for various flavors. Some of these flavors are very unique, something you aren't going to find elsewhere. You will be able to find some in the common chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry, and even a mixed 'Neapolitan' pack. But you see, each land of whatever Disney Park you go to will have it’s own Vinylmation Puff flavor. For example, if you go to Fantasyland, you may want to try the unique Cotton Candy Puff flavor, but you could always venture to, say, Frontierland, to treat yourself to wonderfully bubbly Root Beer Puffs. And some lands may even have multiple flavors, even some special ones created for occasions such as new ride openings and special events! What Tokyo Disneyland does with popcorn (placing themed selling carts in specific lands, selling specific flavors of popcorn) will sort of be what Vinylmation Puffs do, but Vinylmation Puffs will take it to a whole new level. In essence, Vinylmation Puffs are sort of like collectables for your taste buds.

And it gets better! Holidays get their own limited-time flavors as well: why not try Peppermint, Gingerbread, and even Fruitcake for the holiday season, or maybe have a taste of Pumpkin Pie, Cider, or Poison Apple for Halloween and Thanksgiving!

Collect Them All!

The taste is actually just half the collecting fun (hard to believe, right?). Vinylmation Puffs come elegantly packed in Vinylmation-shaped tins. And even better, these tins, like a classic Vinylmation, are decorated! Each tin will feature attraction posters, land posters, or original designs on them. For the first cycle of tins, the designs will be based on attraction posters. In coming years, though, designs will vary, and may even compliment upcoming promotions, movie releases, or other special occasions in the Disney-verse.

Aren’t you excited that you can go into Disneyland and grab a tin with the "Adventure Through Inner Space" attraction poster on it? Of course! But never would we throw Tomorrowland into the entire park, oh no… you’ll have to explore different lands in order to find the tins and flavors you’re looking for. Each land will have its own tin, paired with it’s own unique flavor. For example, if you were to stroll into Adventureland, you could purchase a tin with, prehaps, a "Jungle Cruise" poster on it, or maybe a poster of The Enchanted Tiki Room. Maybe you would be more drawn to (for those real history fanatics) a limited edition design featuring the Little Orange Bird (with, perhaps, Orange-flavored Puffs inside?), who knows? But when you walk on into New Orleans Square, you won't find any Adventureland posters or designs, but rather some cool New Orleans Square-specific designs, maybe a Hitchhiking Ghost tin with a BOOberry flavor?

We’re still not done: there’s one last little surprise we forgot to mention… inside each of the Vinylmation-shaped tins, underneath the tasty cookies, and sealed inside a metallic-colored packet is… not a Vinylmation? No, these are miniature park-specific figurines that you will be able to collect. Each tin-type will have about three different “known” figurines inside, which will be listed on the side of the tin just like a real Vinylmation. There is also a “chaser” figurine in every tin, unknown to the general public (it’s figurine will be covered by a large round question mark on the side of the tin). And yes, there are even figures in the generic chocolate/vanilla/strawberry flavors: you might be treated to a Fab 5 character! Don’t want to eat your way through a whole tin of cookies to find that you have another Stitch figurine? Why not ask a friendly Cast Member if he or she could help you search for a specific figurine? Those CMs know the secrets of the Puffs… or you could just trade them like normal Vinylmations or pins. Is it REALLY such a pain to eat through a tin of delicious marshmallow cookies?

Some Examples...

Here’s a chart of a few of the different flavors and designs you may be able to purchase:

Disneyland/Magic Kingdom:

Main Street: Butterscotch; Main Street Vehicles/Shops inspired design; Main Street Vehicle figures with a Partners Statue chaser

NOS: Red Velvet/BOOberry; POTC/HM Attraction Posters; Pirate/Ghost figures (AAs such as Bride, Auctioneer, Redhead, etc) with a Fantasmic! Mickey Chaser/Riverboat Chaser

Africa: 'Ngalakh' (Baobab Tree Fruit Juice mixed with Peanut Butter, Rasin, Vanilla, and Cinnamon flavorings) with African Animals
Dinoland: Meteorite Mango with Dinosaur Characters
Camp MM: Smores! With Lion King Characters

EPCOT: Can food be educational? Yes! At World Showcase, as you and your Duffy Bear are taking pictures in, say, Canada, you can be munching on some Maple Vinylmation Puffs and reading about how the Canadians use Maple Syrup in many of their dishes! In every country there is not only a learning experience behind each flavor, but also an educational figure of a famous person, place, or thing from the country you're in
.
~~~*~~~
In short, we believe that we have created a treat not only worthy of rising to the ranks of a Churro or a Mickey Ice Cream Sandwich, but also something incredibly innovative and totally different than any other snack you can currently get at any of the Disney Parks. Now, who wants another?
ManEatingWreath's Feedback:
I guess I'll start with Team All Star
I liked the backstory first of all! It was short and sweet which really made the snack interesting to me (It also seemed "tasty" to me as well whether it exists or not). But in a way it (The storyline) kind of did something to this project that was just a bit weird. Quite frankly I can't even explain the words that were in my mind while writing this. Fantasyland is one of those lands that doesn't really need a purposely-written storyline for it, or its attractions. You just kind of pick up on these subtle details and create your own storyline. For example, the Haunted Mansion's storyline is that it's a retirement home for 999 happy haunts. But that's it. The rest is left up to your imagination, save for a few certain scenes (Constance). Back in the day Disney theme park lands didn't necessarily rely on a straight-forward storyline to thrive. Now don't get me wrong, there are some lands and attractions that do need a backstory to them, but then there are those who don't, and Fantasyland is one of them. Your storyline was creative, well thought-out, and intriguing, but to me it didn't seem to fit in with the rest of Fantasyland. The structure of the "wood-punk" lodge did, but not necessarily the storyline.
Your treat on the other hand was great. I for one wanted to get a big bowl of ice cream after reading about it, and I applaud you for the creativity of it all (Although it heavily reminded me of the Volcano dessert at Rainforest Cafe). I REALLY wish this existed just so I could get a bite of it. The incorporation of the dessert into the other parks was also pretty cool, but again you relied too much on the backstory, and that's what hit your project grade the most. With that being said your project shall be given a B+
Please don't hate me for that grade, I was just stating my honest opinion. Being All Stars you should be given the best constructive criticism and feedback possible and be able to take whatever information is given to you.
And now onto Team Wild Card
All I can say is that your project was great! Good point with this statement: "Does a Mickey Premium or a Churro need a backstory to be delicious?" I can really picture this item being sold at Disney parks around the world. It's just one of those things I can picture being sold at a snack stand on Main Street or somewhere in New Orleans Square, or possibly even Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, or Frontierland, or...let's just say I can picture it in a lot of places.
Edible Vinylmations is a wonderful and intriguing concept. And you managed to incorporate a great money-making collectible factor into there, lol. While not as mouth-watering as Team All Star's treat, it did seem tasty. I'm OK with the snack itself, but I don't know how it would taste in all of those bizarre flavors. My grade for this project is an A.
Congratulations to both teams for a job well-done. Results for winning/losing/elimination-wise will be posted upon KingMickey's return.
- Garrett
Elimination:
Looks like we're just going to have to keep going without KingMickey. Forgive me KingMickey.
So it comes down to this. Even though both teams got different grades, both projects were equally great in their own special way. As with the prior project, this was a very hard choice to make. Both teams are so great this season that it's just painful deciding which team should win and which team should lose.
Team All Star- I admit it. I'm guilty as charged when doing the whole "backstory-thing" in my own personal projects, so yes I AM being somewhat of a hypocrite. In the end of it all you managed to pull together something nice and were able to show your team's genius once again.
Team Wild Card- Again, I LOVE the whole Vinylmation thing. It's a brilliant idea and is just flat-out great, but the more I think about it, how would multi-flavored meringues taste? This could either lead to great taste or not-so-great-taste. Would it work?
*Drum Roll Please*
YouTube - Drum Roll Sound Effect
And the winner of Round Two is...Team All Star...
Even though you had the lower grade of the two, your project had a great appeal to it and was all-in-all an innovative new way to showcase those famous Disney treats. Congratulations folks, you earned yourselves another victory.
Team Wild Card, keep in mind that in the end you did have the higher grade of the two. This means that even though you didn't win, you showed a great amount of effort, hard work, and creativity. The idea of having edible Vinylmations is still great, I'm just not-so-sure about how the snack would fare with the public. Winning second, this means you will have to lose your nominee, and that nominee is DisneyRules2010...I'm sorry, but you have been eliminated from So, You Want to be an Imagineer...
